What inspired you to do the Carter Gate project? I got interested in doing the gate because several years ago, Chatham Hall hired a consulting firm to do a master plan of the entire campus and one of the things that we found out was that Google Maps was routing people to the School through the back entrance.
But, we only had a wire fence and an old farm gate back then. Instead of coming through beautiful Chatham, we were routed the other way. The consultants had a drawing of a lovely three-board fence with brick columns, and I thought, “Let’s do it!”
Why do you make philanthropic contributions to Chatham Hall? The reason I make a contribution to Chatham Hall is because I want to be sure it’s still here, and whatever little bit I can do to help ensure that I will do. I do believe it is the best girls’ school in the southeast. Although it’s probably the best kept secret, we’re all working on making sure that it’s no longer a secret. Chatham Hall was totally seminal in my education and in my development to come to a school where the teacher:student ratio was so small. You can’t get lost in a community like this.
What do you think Chatham Hall does best? Chatham Hall gives them an opportunity to find themselves and to explore different avenues. Any girl can be a leader; that’s the nice thing about Chatham Hall, it teaches girls to know who they are, what their goals are, and how to get there.
Why is it important for other people to support Chatham Hall financially? So it will still be here for all the future students that want to come!
